Why do I have a sore neck after exercising?

Are you going to the gym, do Personal Training or participate in exercise classes and always end up with a sore neck and/or headache straight after or the next day? If so you might need to have a close look at your cervical spine and scapula tracking when performing exercises as you can sometimes do more harm then good if consistently straining passive structures and/or overusing the often overly tight and tender neck musculature. One of the most common problems is the overusage of the upper trapezius in overhead movements. Due to bad postural habits that muscle group is generally tight and short resulting in rounded shoulders and neck tension. If overusing this muscle in activities without correct form and functionality you will end up with neck tension which can lead to a tension headache.
